What this tool does

It changes the capitalisation of text without you having to retype it. That covers the everyday cases — a heading pasted in all caps, a paragraph typed with caps lock on, a title that needs proper capitalisation — and the programming naming conventions, where converting a phrase to camelCase or snake_case by hand is tedious and easy to get slightly wrong.

Conversions apply to the text box in place, so you can chain them: convert to lowercase first, then to Title Case, to clean up text that arrived in all caps. The Undo button steps back through everything you have applied.

How to use it

  1. Paste your textAnything from a few words to a full document.
  2. Click a caseThe conversion is applied immediately to the box above.
  3. Copy or downloadTake the result to your clipboard, or save it as a .txt file.

Title Case is not the same as capitalising every word

This trips people up constantly. Proper title case leaves short function words in lowercase unless they open or close the title. “The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire” is title case; “The Rise And Fall Of The Roman Empire” is just every word capitalised, and it reads noticeably clumsier.

The Title Case button here follows the common AP-style approach: articles (a, an, the), coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, nor) and short prepositions (at, by, for, in, of, on, to, via) stay lowercase in the middle of a title, and the first and last words are always capitalised. Style guides genuinely disagree on the details — Chicago lowercases all prepositions regardless of length, while AP capitalises those of four letters or more — so if you are writing to a specific guide, check the result rather than assuming.

If you actually do want every word capitalised, that is the separate Capitalize Every Word button.

Sentence case and the word "I"

Sentence case lowercases everything, then capitalises the first letter after each sentence-ending full stop, question mark or exclamation mark, as well as at the start of each line. It also restores the standalone pronoun I, which is the one word that would otherwise look obviously wrong.

What it cannot do is know your proper nouns. Names, places, brands and days of the week will come out lowercase, because no amount of pattern matching can reliably tell “he went to Reading” from “he enjoys reading”. Sentence case is a starting point for a fix, not a finished edit.

The clean-up options

Trim each line strips leading and trailing whitespace from every line — useful for text copied out of a PDF or an email quote.

Collapse extra spaces reduces runs of spaces and tabs to one, and runs of blank lines to a single blank line. This is the fastest way to tidy text pasted from a formatted document.

Remove line breaks joins everything into one continuous paragraph, which is what you usually want when text arrives hard-wrapped at 72 characters from a plain-text email.

Your text never leaves your browser

Every conversion is plain JavaScript running on your device. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and closing the tab discards it entirely. That matters if what you are reformatting is a draft contract, a private message or anything else you would not paste into a stranger’s web form.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change text from all caps to normal?

Paste the text and click lowercase, then Sentence case or Title Case depending on what you need. Converting to lowercase first is what lets the second conversion capitalise correctly, since the tool applies changes in place.

What is the difference between Title Case and capitalising every word?

Title Case leaves short words like a, and, of and the in lowercase unless they begin or end the title, which is how headlines are conventionally written. Capitalize Every Word does exactly what it says and capitalises all of them, including the small ones.

Why doesn't Sentence case capitalise names?

Because no rule can reliably tell a proper noun from an ordinary word - 'he went to Reading' and 'he enjoys reading' are indistinguishable to a pattern matcher. Sentence case fixes sentence starts and the pronoun I, and leaves proper nouns for you to correct.

What is camelCase versus snake_case?

camelCase joins words with no separator and capitalises each word after the first, as in theQuickFox - common in JavaScript and Java. snake_case joins them with underscores in lowercase, as in the_quick_fox - common in Python, Ruby and database column names.

Is there a limit on how much text I can convert?

Only your browser's memory. Documents of many thousands of words convert instantly, because the work happens on your own device rather than being sent to a server.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Every conversion runs in JavaScript in your browser. Your text is never transmitted or stored, and it disappears entirely when you close the tab.
