What this tool does

An anagram finder rearranges every letter of a word or letter string and checks each arrangement against a dictionary — about 231,000 words, the same one behind our Word Scramble Solver. It returns only perfect anagrams: words that use every one of your letters exactly once, with none added and none left over.

That is the strict, puzzle-page definition of an anagram, and it is different from unscrambling. If you want every word buildable from some of your letters — useful mid-game with a Scrabble rack — the Word Scramble Solver does that instead.

How it works

  1. Enter a word or lettersType up to 15 letters, in any order. Case and spacing don’t matter.
  2. Press Find AnagramsWe check every dictionary word with the exact same letters and show what comes back, along with a note if your own word is itself a valid dictionary entry.
  3. Refine if you need toSwitch on “Common words only” to hide obscure dictionary entries, or sort by Scrabble score to see the highest-value anagram first.

Getting more out of it

Anagram versus word scramble

Every anagram is a rearrangement of all the original letters. A word scramble solver, by contrast, finds words from any subset — play SAT, ATE or TAS from the rack STAE without touching every tile. Reach for this tool when the puzzle specifically asks for a full-letter rearrangement (crosswords, cryptic clues, classic anagram puzzles); reach for the Word Scramble Solver when you have a rack and want every playable word.

Why most words return nothing

Most English words are the only arrangement of their letters that forms a real word — there is no dictionary anagram of “orange,” for instance. A blank result is normal, not a bug. Words built from common, evenly-used letters (like listen, stressed, or night) are far more likely to have one or more anagrams than words with rare letters like Q, X or Z.

Common words only

A full dictionary includes plenty of technically-valid but obscure entries. Switch on “Common words only” to see just the everyday vocabulary — useful when you want an anagram people will actually recognize, and less useful if you are checking tournament validity, where obscure words are still fair game.

This version matches single words only. Multi-word phrase anagrams (e.g. rearranging “a decimal point” into “I’m a dot in place”) need a much larger search and aren’t supported yet.

Your letters stay on your device

The dictionary downloads to your browser once and every lookup after that runs locally. Nothing you type is sent to a server, logged, or stored — there is no record of what you searched, including on our side.

Frequently asked questions

What is an anagram?

An anagram is a word formed by rearranging every letter of another word exactly once, using none extra and leaving none out. “Listen” and “silent” are anagrams of each other because both use the letters e, i, l, n, s, t and nothing else.

How is this different from the Word Scramble Solver?

The Word Scramble Solver finds every word buildable from any subset of your letters, which is what you want mid-game with a rack. This tool finds only perfect anagrams — words that use every one of your letters exactly once, which is the classic puzzle-page sense of “anagram.”

Does it work with phrases or multiple words?

Not yet — this version matches a single word or a single string of letters against single dictionary words. Multi-word phrase anagrams are a much larger search and are on the list for a future update.

Why did my word return no results?

Most words simply have no anagram — the vast majority of English words are the only arrangement of their letters that forms a real word. A blank result means your word is one of those, not that anything is wrong.

How many letters can I enter?

Up to 15. Entries of 10 or more letters automatically load an extra list of longer words the first time you need it.

Is what I type sent anywhere?

No. The dictionary downloads to your browser once and every lookup runs on your device after that. Nothing you type is transmitted, logged or stored on a server.
