What this tool does

A word counter answers the question every writer eventually asks: is this too long, too short, or about right? This one goes further than a bare number — alongside words and characters it estimates how long the text takes to read or speak aloud, checks it against common platform limits, and surfaces the words you have leaned on most.

How to use it

  1. Paste or type your textCounts update on every keystroke — there is no button to press.
  2. Check it against a limitThe platform-limits panel shows how close you are to common caps like an X post, an SMS, or a meta description, and turns red once you go over.
  3. Fix the case if you need toUPPERCASE, lowercase, Title Case and Sentence case all rewrite the text in place — useful for cleaning up a pasted heading or a shouty email before you send it.

Reading and speaking time

Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute, the figure most commonly cited for adult silent reading. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, closer to a natural speaking pace, which is the number that matters if you are timing a script or a voiceover rather than a blog post. Both are estimates: technical text reads slower than a story, and a practiced speaker reads faster than average.

Why the keyword list is useful

Repeating the same word without noticing is one of the most common things a second read catches — and one of the easiest to miss when you are the one who wrote it. The most-used-words panel excludes common stopwords like “the” and “and” so what is left is usually meaningful: either the topic of the piece, or a word you should probably vary.

Your text stays on your device

Every count, limit check and case conversion runs in JavaScript in your own browser. Nothing you type is uploaded, logged, or stored — there is no server in this tool at all, which is also why the counts update instantly with no delay.

Frequently asked questions

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time uses 200 words per minute, the commonly cited average adult silent-reading speed. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, a typical spoken pace. Both are estimates — actual time varies with the text and the reader.

Does character count include spaces?

Both figures are shown separately: total characters including spaces, and characters excluding spaces. Use whichever matches the limit you are checking against — most platform limits, including X and SMS, count spaces.

How are sentences and paragraphs counted?

Sentences are counted by splitting on periods, exclamation points and question marks. Paragraphs are counted by blank lines. Like every word counter, this is an approximation — abbreviations and unusual punctuation can occasionally throw the sentence count off by one or two.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Every count is calculated in your browser as you type. The text you enter is never sent to a server, logged, or stored — closing or reloading the page clears it completely.
