What this tool does

Splitting a bill after dinner always seems to take longer than it should. This calculator does the whole thing at once: pick a tip percentage, say how many people are splitting it, and it shows the tip, the new total, and exactly what each person owes — tip included.

How to use it

  1. Enter the billUse the pre-tip subtotal from the receipt.
  2. Pick a tip percentageTap a preset, drag the slider, or type an exact number if you have a specific figure in mind.
  3. Split it if you need toUse the stepper to set how many people are paying. The per-person amounts appear automatically once it’s more than one.
  4. Round up if you want a clean splitTurns the total into a whole dollar amount before dividing it, so nobody has to deal with odd cents.

What tip percentage is normal?

In the United States, 15–20% is the common range at a sit-down restaurant, with 18–20% typical for good service and 25% or more reserved for exceptional service. Counter service, takeout, and delivery often use a smaller percentage or a flat amount, if anything at all. Tipping norms vary significantly outside the US — in many countries a service charge is already included and additional tipping is unusual.

Pre-tax or post-tax?

Etiquette guides generally recommend tipping on the subtotal before tax, since sales tax has nothing to do with the service you received. In practice, many people simply tip on the total shown on the receipt because it’s one less number to find — the difference is usually a matter of cents.

How round-up works

Switching on round-up takes the bill plus tip and rounds it up to the next whole dollar, then splits that rounded total. The extra amount from rounding is added entirely to the tip, so the server benefits from it rather than it disappearing into an odd per-person fraction.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal tip percentage?

In the US, 15-20% is typical at a sit-down restaurant, with 18-20% common for good service. 10% or less is often used for counter service or takeout, when tipping is expected at all. Norms vary by country and by service type.

How does splitting the bill work with round-up?

Round-up rounds the total bill (including tip) up to the nearest whole dollar before splitting it between people. The extra cents are added to the tip, so the server gets a little more and the split stays a clean number per person.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Most guides suggest tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, since tax is not the restaurant's service. In practice many people tip on the total on the receipt because it is simpler — the difference is usually small.

Is my bill information stored anywhere?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server or stored, aside from the numbers appearing in the page URL if you use the share link, which you control.
